SAEC Terms and conditions

  • The Summer Academic Experience Courses (SAEC) are open to students who are, on arrival, between 16 and 18 years old. 
  • Once you have received a conditional offer, you have four weeks to upload your academic transcript and academic reference through the applicant portal.
  • You must also pay a deposit of £500 within 2 weeks, or by 1 April 2024, whichever is sooner.
  • If you receive an unconditional offer, to confirm your place; the balance of fees of £5,500 must be paid within four weeks of the unconditional offer or before 1 April 2024, whichever is sooner.
  • Once you have accepted your offer of a place, you have 14 days in which you can withdraw without penalty.
  • There will be no refund of the deposit irrespective of circumstances. Parents are strongly advised to obtain insurance to cover illness or other unforeseen eventualities. Fees may be refunded at the discretion of the SAEC Manager.
  • Fees cover transport to and from Edinburgh Airport or Glasgow Airport (note: not Glasgow Prestwick) on the official course start (6 July 2024) and end dates (27 July 2024), tuition, accommodation, full board, use of sports facilities and all planned excursions and social events indicated in the programme.
  • The SAEC Manager reserves the right to dismiss any student whose conduct is deemed unacceptable according to the University’s code of conduct or the Mutual Responsibilities Agreement (PDF) that the University, the participating student and the student’s parent or guardian will sign before attendance on the SAEC. Links to the Mutual Responsibilities Agreement will be sent to the applicant in due course.
  • Although every effort will be made to adhere to the advertised details of the SAEC, the University of St Andrews reserves the right to modify any aspect of the SAEC as necessary.
  • In the UK, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy or to be bought alcohol or tobacco, and it is a criminal offence to smoke in premises open to the public. The use of illegal drugs may result in police involvement and dismissal from the SAEC programme. The use of alcohol and tobacco is not permitted on the SAEC programme, even for those students aged 18. The use of alcohol or tobacco may result in dismissal from the SAEC programme.
