Medicine
On this unique Medicine course, students will attend lectures in the School of Medicine, participate in academic seminars on the subject, and conduct practical experiments and data collection in our laboratories.
Subject content
- Information on studying medicine in the UK, and career options.
- Introductions/taster lectures on important subjects and topics within medicine.
- Practical sessions exploring the scientific principles of medicine and practical clinical skills.
Topic examples
- Clinically applied anatomy and physiology.
- Clinical medicine and diagnoses.
- Experimental design and data interpretation.
These examples are merely a sample and are based on previous years. Topics may change based on the curriculum chosen by the department in any given year.
Academic skills
Aside from the study of specific content, students will learn to improve their academic writing, learning to shape arguments and developing an academic writing style, whilst also improving their subject-specific vocabulary.
Learning experience
Students will experience a mixture of lectures, seminars, group work and independent study on this course. Lecture content is taught by staff of the University of St Andrews.
The course also offers students the opportunity to practice medical communication with the help of qualified GPs and our simulated patients.
Additional information
Aside from the social activities and cultural excursions open to all course participants, Medicine students will complete a poster-project on a medical topic and enjoy a special visit to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
Course outcomes
In order to aid potential applicants to Medicine, students will:
- Become familiar with the application process to study Medicine in the UK.
- Learn about the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT).
- Practise for Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs).
Students will receive an official certificate from the University of St Andrews to confirm their successful completion of the course.
