University Hall

University Hall, the very first hall of residence at the University, is a charming Victorian building situated near to the Sports Centre and the various science buildings on the North Haugh. It was also the first female student residence in Scotland, and this is still honoured today by the Wardlaw Wing which is occupied by females only.

Hall information

The building is split into three main sections: the Wardlaw Wing (for female residents only) and the Lumsden Wing and Old Wing (co-ed).

The majority of rooms are single bedrooms, but there are a few shared bedrooms for entrant undergraduate students. Find out about sharing at St Andrews

For undergraduate students, University Hall has:

  • 236 single standard rooms with single bed size
  • 52 shared bed spaces in standard rooms with single bed size
  • 14 bed spaces in en suite rooms with single bed size
  • 1 triple shared standard room with single bed size
  • 3 triple shared en suite rooms with single bed size

Location

University Hall is located on the western side of town and backs onto the Sports Centre as well as the North Haugh. It is only a 15-minute walk to the centre of town and local amenities, and about a 20-minute walk to the Old Course and beautiful West Sands beach.

What is University Hall like?

University Hall is filled with character, from the antique libraries and oak-panelled common rooms to the timeless traditions held by its residents.

It also has a fantastic community atmosphere thanks to its relatively small size. The student committee organises movie nights, pizza parties, games nights, sports competitions, and the traditional “Uni Hall Ball”.
