About the School

The School is a leading centre for scholarship in the field of geography and sustainable development. The School's aim is to integrate the study of the Earth's system with its landscapes, peoples, places and environments. Teaching and research covers the breadth of the geography discipline, bringing together expertise in the social and natural sciences to examine and develop the principles and practice of sustainable development.

Research

The School aims to be world-leading in all aspects of research. 94% of our research overall was rated as world leading or internationally excellent by the Research Excellence Framework 2021. This places the School among the top universities in the UK.

The School hosts a number of research groups which provide a platform to exchange research information and ideas. It involves all academic and research staff and students in the School and also links across the University and beyond to take forward new research and postgraduate teaching opportunities.

Teaching

The School is ranked 4th in the UK by The Times Good University Guide 2023. Academics in the School bring their research interests, passions and expertise to the fore in their teaching to create a challenging and exciting learning environment for highly qualified students.

Research is supported by an impressive array of equipment and laboratories, including:

  • physical sciences laboratory
  • microscope suite
  • cartographic and design services
  • IT laboratory with GIS and graphic applications
  • high specification PCs, scanners, digitisers, plotters and printers

Location

The School Office is located in the Irvine Building which lies between St Salvator's Quadrangle and St Salvator’s Hall of residence. The School itself occupies part of the Irvine Building and the top floor of the neighbouring United College Building on the north side facing The Scores.
