• Cost of living

  You will need to consider costs beyond your tuition fees while living in the UK, such as residence, food, travel, and immigration fees.

• Healthcare and medication

  You should register with a doctor once you arrive in the UK, and consider any medication you will need to bring with you or get a prescription for.

• Opening a bank account

  It is a good idea to open a UK bank account once you arrive so that you can access cash via a cash machine and set up direct debits or standing orders.

• Phone and internet

  Many students who come to St Andrews bring a mobile phone with them. Mobile phones in the UK require a SIM card to connect to a network. There are two mobile phone stores in St Andrews where you can buy phones and SIM cards. Find out more about mobile phones.

  Eduroam, the University’s data network, is available to all students at St Andrews across most University buildings, including the library, lecture halls, Students’ Association and halls of residence. Find out more about internet access.

• Driving in the UK

  If you have a current full driving licence in your home country, you are permitted to drive for up to one year after you first enter the UK. After this date, the rules depend on your country of origin. You will need to be fully aware of the legal requirements of driving any motor vehicle.
