About the University

The University's history began in 1477 when Count Eberhard “the Bearded” of Württemberg founded the University. In addition to the nearly 84,000 inhabitants, there are some 28,500 students. Some 450 professors and more than 4,000 other academic staff teach at the University’s seven faculties. Tübingen is one of eleven universities selected for the Excellence Initiative by the German government.

Classics is taught within the Faculty of Humanities. The University is also well-known for its Museum of Ancient Cultures, which is located in the Hohentübingen Castle. The departments of ancient history, archaeology, art history, classics and religious studies and their excellent libraries at the foot of the Schloßberg and in the Old Town round off an outstanding environment in which to study Classics.

Divinity is taught in the Faculty of Protestant Theology, the Faculty of Catholic Theology and the Center for Islamic Theology. There are numerous opportunities for theological dialogue and joint research work.
