Located in the heart of Dublin, Trinity College, Dublin (TCD) is rated highly for the quality of its teaching and research. This is reflected in the attractiveness of TCD to postgraduate students, who are encouraged to participate in dedicated graduate conferences and workshops and are welcomed at the research seminar series.

Who can go?

Postgraduate research students in the School of History.

There is currently a limit of one postgraduate research student per academic year for a period of three to six months.

 

How to apply

Interested students must check that there is an academic at Trinity College who can act as their host supervisor.

PhD students interested in applying to studying at Trinity College need to submit the following:

  • cover letter
  • CV
  • description of the proposed research (maximum 500 words)
  • supporting letter from their supervisor to the School of History study abroad coordinator.

In the event of multiple applicants for this exchange, the School's postgraduate committee will decide which application to prioritise. Further information is also available from the postgraduate secretary in History (pghist@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Your studies

The academic year at Trinity College is split into three terms:

  • Michaelmas term runs from early September to late December
  • Hilary term runs from mid-January to early April
  • Trinity term runs from mid-April to early June.

Orientation is provided by the International Office at Trinity. Additionally, the Department of History at Trinity provides its own orientation and a handbook.

Passports and visas

If you are an EU national, you usually won’t require a visa and may enter Ireland with your passport or national identity card. Trinity College provides further information regarding ID cards, permits and visas.

You should ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your trip, and for at least six months after you return to the UK. You should scan your passport and keep a copy for your records.

If you are a European Union national, you will not require a visa and may enter the European Union countries with your passport or national identity card. Please note that you may have to comply with legal obligations, such as registering your address with the local authorities.

About the College

Trinity College was founded in 1592 and is rated highly for the quality of its teaching and research.

As a legal deposit library, Trinity College has excellent library facilities and is the largest research library in Ireland, receiving over 100,000 new items each year. The library holds around five million books and significant collections of manuscripts (including the Book of Kells), maps and music. The book depository holds a further three million books.

Within the School of Histories and Humanities, the Department of History has strong links with Classics, History of Art and Gender Studies. The Department enjoys an international research profile in several areas across a diverse range of periods, countries and themes – most notably, in the history of Ireland from the Middle Ages to the present day and global history.

Postgraduates are encouraged to participate in dedicated graduate conferences and workshops and are welcomed at the research seminar series, which covers:

  • contemporary Irish history
  • mediaeval history
  • early modern history
  • modern European history and war studies.

Finance

As an exchange student, you will not pay tuition fees to your host university, and will only be liable for your normal St Andrews tuition fees.

Research Council students should make sure that they have their funding body’s permission to study abroad, notifying them particularly for any mobility grants that they may be receiving.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Trinity College is limited. The College's Accommodation Advisory Service runs each autumn prior to the beginning of Michaelmas term to assist students in finding alternative accommodation. This service can provide lists of available private accommodation and advice on location and costs.

For private accommodation, the Accommodation Office advises that students should budget at least €150 per week for private accommodation and should arrive at least two to three weeks before teaching begins in order to find suitable housing.

Temporary housing on campus is available for a maximum of two weeks during September. Spaces are limited, so it is advisable to reserve a place early.

Travel and transport

Flights to Dublin are available from Edinburgh Airport and from many other UK airports. Dublin Airport is located approximately 14km from Trinity College and is connected by bus and coach services. There is no rail link between the airport and Trinity College.

Dublin is a compact city with a variety of public transport links, which makes getting around Dublin easy. Trinity College provides more information about public transport in Dublin.

For discounted travel within Ireland, you can purchase a Student Leap Card, which is available from the Students’ Union. This is the only card accepted by Irish Rail, Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann and LUAS (Dublin's light rail tram system) for student fares. It is also a discount card for hundreds of goods and services nationwide.

Student support

Trinity College provides a range of services to support students during their studies:

  • The College Health Centre provides inexpensive primary healthcare. The service is open weekdays and is committed to making Trinity College a healthy place to live, study and work.
  • The Trinity Disability Service provides advice, support and information for students with disabilities. They help to create an inclusive transformational environment and provide a platform for innovation and inclusion.
  • The Student Counselling Service is a confidential service available free of charge to every Trinity College student. It also offers learning support and development aids.
