Roma Tre University is situated in the Ostiense area of Italy and is just minutes away from the historical centre of Rome. The high quality of teaching and research programmes offered by Roma Tre has lead to the University being significantly recognised in the academic world.

Who can go?
Postgraduate research students in the School of History, particularly those in the field of Legal and Constitutional History, for example:
- law
- legal history
- global constitutionalism
- legal aspects of international relations.
This exchange allows for one postgraduate research student to study abroad per academic year.
How to apply
PhD students interested in applying to studying at the University of Roma Tre need to submit the following documents:
- cover letter
- CV
- description of the proposed research (maximum 500 words)
- supporting letter from their supervisor to the School of History study abroad coordinator.
In the event of multiple applicants for this exchange, the School of History’s postgraduate committee will decide which application to prioritise. Further information is also available from the postgraduate secretary in History (pghist@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Your studies
The academic year at Roma Tre is split into two semesters:
- Semester 1 runs from September to December
- Semester 2 runs from March to May.
Lectures are taught in Italian. You are responsible for scheduling time for independent study.
Examinations take place at Roma Tre three times a year and may be either oral or written exams. Examination dates can be found on department notice boards, and you must ensure that you register for examinations ahead of time online.
Passports and visas
If you are an EU national, you usually won’t require a visa and may enter Italy with your national identity card or passport. Roma Tre provides further information regarding ID cards, permits and visas.
You should ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your trip, and for at least six months after you return to the UK. You should scan your passport and keep a copy for your records.
If you are a European Union national, you will not require a visa and may enter the European Union countries with your passport or national identity card. Please note that you may have to comply with legal obligations, such as registering your address with the local authorities.

About the University
Roma Tre University was founded in 1992 and is the youngest university in Rome with a student population of around 40,000. The University is committed to offering courses that will enable students to achieve high levels of professionalism and research preparation.
Roma Tre hosts conferences and seminars, which are opportunities for reflection and meeting with prominent personalities in the field of culture, research and social and political commitment.
Finance
As an exchange student, you will not pay tuition fees to your host university, and will only be liable for your normal St Andrews tuition fees.
Research Council students should make sure that they have their funding body’s permission to study abroad, notifying them particularly for any mobility grants that they may be receiving.
Typical living costs can vary depending on where you choose to live. Roma Tre University does have a few canteens that offer cheap meals for students.
Accommodation
Roma Tre does not offer accommodation to its students, and finding accommodation in Rome can be difficult, especially if it is for less than an academic year. However, the University has an agreement with the Student Tourist Centre which provides assistance in finding accommodation for students.

Travel and transport
Ciampino Airport is the closest airport to the city of Rome and mainly deals with charter flights and budget airlines. Ciampino train station is a short bus or taxi journey from the airport, where you can get a connecting train to the centre of Rome.
Alternatively, Flumicino Airport is an international airport approximately 30km from Rome. From Flumicino you can easily reach the centre of Rome by train, and these depart frequently throughout the day.
Although taxis are available in Rome, they tend to be more expensive compared to other European countries. Students should avoid taking a taxi during busy times as heavy traffic can lead to delays and higher taxi fares.
