Founded in 1289, the University of Paul-Valéry is located in the coastal city of Montpellier. With a student population of approximately 20,000, the University offers the chance to study in a vibrant, cultural city and is a great place to become immersed in a new culture.

Who can go?

Postgraduate research students in the School of History.

There is currently a limit of two students per academic year for one semester each.

How to apply

PhD students interested in applying to studying at the University of Paul-Valéry need to submit the following:

  • cover letter
  • CV
  • description of the proposed research (maximum 500 words)
  • supporting letter from their supervisor to the School of History study abroad coordinator.

In the event of multiple applicants for this exchange, the School of History’s postgraduate committee will decide which application to prioritise. Further information is also available from the postgraduate secretary in History (pghist@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Your studies

The academic year at Paul-Valéry is split into two semesters:

  • Semester 1 runs from September to December
  • Semester 2 runs from January to June.

Passports and visas

If you are an EU national, you usually won’t require a visa and may enter France with your passport or national identity card. Paul-Valéry provides further information regarding visas and residence permits.

You should ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your trip, and for at least six months after you return to the UK. You should scan your passport and keep a copy for your records.

If you are a European Union national, you will not require a visa and may enter the European Union countries with your passport or national identity card. Please note that you may have to comply with legal obligations, such as registering your address with the local authorities.

About the University

Paul-Valéry is one of the oldest universities in Europe having been founded in 1289. Situated in the south of France, the University is close to the Mediterranean Sea resulting in a nice, warm climate. Today, Paul-Valéry brings together more than 20,000 students and 1,600 staff.

Finance

As an exchange student, you will not pay tuition fees to your host university, and will only be liable for your normal St Andrews tuition fees.

Research Council students should make sure that they have their funding body’s permission to study abroad, notifying them particularly for any mobility grants that they may be receiving.

Accommodation

The University of Paul-Valéry does not guarantee on-campus accommodation for all students, and finding accommodation in Montpellier can be difficult so students must be organised. The University does offer services to help students find accommodation, such as CROUS Montpellier.

Travel and transport

The closest airport to Paul-Valéry is Montpellier-Méditerranée, which is approximately 12km away from the University. Many airlines fly to Montpellier-Méditerranée from London airports.

Travel within Montpellier is easy, considering its numerous pedestrian areas, and over 150km of bicycle paths. For those who want to travel around by bike, bikes are available to rent from several automatic bike stations.

Montpellier's tramway system is the ideal means of public transportation for getting around Montpellier, visiting many local tourist sites, and generally getting to know the area from a new perspective.
