Research

Research at St Andrews is driven by a vigorous and exciting environment that brings together emerging and established academics working on a range of topics across the globe. Alongside deep local knowledge in the Americas, Africa, Eurasia and the Pacific this has allowed the Department to consolidate an international reputation for world-leading research in areas such as:

  • art and material culture
  • collaborative anthropology
  • energy and climate change
  • epistemologies of medicine
  • history and archive

Capable of attracting generous funding, researchers are involved in individual research projects as well as larger collaborative endeavours within and beyond anthropology.

The dynamism of the research agenda is reflected in thematically driven research centres as well as regular Departmental research seminars, which are open to the public. The Department also often hosts conferences and workshops.

Post-doctoral scholars who wish to base their research activities in the Department are also welcome. If you are interested in applying for funding (eg British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Newton Fellowship, Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, MSCA Fellowship, ESRC Future Leaders Fellowship and ESRC New Investigator grants), you must contact the Department and our Director of Research well in advance.
