Library borrowing instructions

Who may borrow resources?

  1. Music Centre Members, Associate Teachers and Music Centre Staff may borrow material. Please do not borrow ‘on behalf of’ someone else; once material is out, it should be clear who has it.
  2. Music Centre Affiliated Societies may borrow either individual items or sets of scores, which need to be checked out both with the society detailed and a nominated contact point who is a Music Centre member.

Conditions of borrowing:

  1. All borrowed material should be checked out via the Laidlaw Music Centre reception (see below, How to borrow resources).
  2. All borrowed material must be returned by the end of the academic year in which the loan took place, unless by special arrangement with the Music Centre (to be noted on the borrowing record).
  3. If sets are borrowed for affiliated societies, distribution to individual affiliated society members must be carefully tracked, and any significantly damaged or missing copies reported when the sets are returned.
  4. While we are pragmatic that music is a practical resource that will be used to its eventual point of destruction, careless loss or damage may result in replacement charges, and future borrowing rights could be withdrawn unless costs are covered (at the discretion of the Director of Music).

How to borrow resources:

  1. The current library catalogue is not comprehensive but gives an indication of the kinds of resources available. If you are interested in something that is not in the catalogue, email music@st-andrews.ac.uk and we will check if it is in our holdings and available.
  2. Email your borrowing request to music@st-andrews.ac.uk including your name, name of society (if applicable), composer, title and parts (if applicable)
  3. If you would like to browse a particular area of our collection, email music@st-andrews.ac.uk to arrange a time to do this.
  4. Details of any items borrowed must be entered by a member of the Music Centre staff into the borrowing record (see reception) before it is taken away.
  5. If the material you want to borrow has multiple parts, the set should be checked by a member of staff before issuing. Please leave time for this to happen and be prepared to come back later at busy times.
  6. Borrowed material must be returned via reception so it and any associated parts can be checked and recorded as returned. There will be a box in which this material can be left pending a check before reshelving.
