Scotland and its Visual Culture

This course provides a survey of Scottish painting, sculpture, architecture, design and photography, from the late medieval period through to the present day. It will introduce students to the rich history of Scottish art, provide opportunities to learn more about Scottish culture and history and discuss major themes and developments in the history of art through the period. The course will also consider the context of Scottish Art today, both at home and in a global context, and will discuss Scottish art in the context of its relationship with the major artistic movements and developments. It will draw on the physical environment, material objects and rich collections to provide a sense of the themes that have formed Scotland’s art and culture.
