Non-ASPA research

The animal ethics process aims to protect the welfare of animals, provide guidance to academics and protect both the reputation of academics and the university.

Ethical approval is a requirement of most journals prior to publication and some funders may require evidence that the work is carried out to standards equivalent to those applied under ASPA.

The majority of research on animals performed by our researchers involves studying animals in their natural environment.  However, approval may still be required for research using videos and data previously collected of animals.

Approval for non-ASPA research is required for the following:

  • any vertebrate or cephalopod outside of the UK
  • any vertebrate or cephalopod in the UK below the threshold required for licensed work
  • any animal tissue.
