Lost or stolen documents

If your passport, visa, biometric residence permit, or any other form of travel documentation gets lost or stolen, you must apply for a replacement as soon as possible.

International advisers in Registry can answer any questions you may have relating to visas and other travel documents. If you lose or have your passport stolen, you must:
1. Report the loss or theft to the police. If you are in a country outside of the UK when this happens, you will need to report this to the police in the country where you currently are located.
2. Make an application for a replacement passport. Contact your country’s embassy, consulate or high commission in the UK or the country where you are currently located for information on how to obtain a replacement passport.
There may be a considerable wait to obtain a replacement passport or travel document. This is not something which the UKVI can influence.
If your visa for the UK is issued on a vignette for the duration of the period of your leave, and you lose or have your passport stolen, you must:
1. Report the loss or theft to the police. If you are in a country outside of the UK when this happens, you will need to report this to the police in the country where you currently are located.
2. Make an application for a replacement passport. Contact your country’s embassy, consulate or high commission in the UK or the country where you are currently located for information on how to obtain a replacement passport.
3. Apply for a visa transfer online and pay the full fee. You do not need to request a new CAS from your educational institution.
UKVI visa application centres offer a variety of chargeable value-added services which may enable quicker processing of your application. Find a visa application centre.
If you either lose or have your biometric residence permit (BRP) card stolen, you must:
1. Report the loss or theft to the police and obtain a police report.
2. Notify UKVI as soon as possible via their online report service. UKVI will contact you within one working day to tell you what to do next. Please note that UK bank holidays (such as Christmas day and New Year’s day) and weekends are not counted as working days.
3. Apply for a 'single entry visa to replace BRP' to re-enter the UK. When asked to select a visa type, you should choose Other > Others > Replacement Biometric Residence Permit.
4. Once you have returned to the UK, you should apply for a replacement BRP card.
