The International Education institute awards the Next Step scholarship, to up to four exceptional students planning to start an International Foundation Programme in September 2024. 

To be eligible to apply for the Next Step September scholarship, you must:

  • be an offer-holder on an International Foundation Programme at the University of St Andrews.
  • Be intending to study one of the following degrees at the University of St Andrews:BSc Chemistry, MA Film Studies, BSc Geography or MA Geography, MGeol Earth Sciences, BSc Environmental Sciences.
  • Be willing to be an Ambassador for the International Education Institute and your foundation programme whilst in receipt of Next Step funding.
  • Complete an application form for the Next Step before midnight UTC on Sunday 31 March 2024.
  • Email your video submission to ifp@st-andrews.ac.uk before midnight UTC on Sunday 31 March 2024.

Value of award (per year)

£3,000 stipend

  • This amount is paid as a personal stipend in two instalments. The first payment of £1,000 will be issued to you as a monetary stipend when you begin your international foundation programme. The second payment of £2,000 will be issued to you as a monetary stipend when you start your undergraduate degree.
  • The Next Step scholarship is not transferable to any other programme of study at the University of St Andrews.
  • The offer of a scholarship is provisional upon the offer holder accepting and enrolling on an International Foundation programme (September 2024 entry) by the enrolment deadline. 
  • Students who interrupt, suspend or cease their studies are not eligible to receive the scholarship and will have the scholarship offer withdrawn. 

Duration of award

This award is paid over two years. The first payment is made when you begin your foundation studies at the University of St Andrews. The second payment is made when you begin your undergraduate programme at the University of St Andrews.

At what stage of my course application can I apply for this scholarship?

Please apply for the scholarship after you have received an offer for a foundation programme at St Andrews.

Video Submission

Students applying to the Next Step scholarship must email a video that is a maximum of two-minutes long to ifp@st-andrews.ac.uk as part of their scholarship application.

Your two-minute video can include music, photographs, graphics and subtitles, but it must also include at least one minute of you talking directly to camera.

Your video is your opportunity to demonstrate:

  • A well-structured presentation, including a title frame, a closing frame and subtitles.
  • Content that describes your interest in and enthusiasm for your chosen degree subject.
  • Why you would be an effective ambassador for your intended degree subject.

 

The filename of your video should include:

  • Your student ID number at the University of St Andrews.
  • Your first name and last name.
  • The name of the programme you applied for.

A file name would therefore look like this example:

Email your two-minute video to ifp@st-andrews.ac.uk and include the following details in your email:

  • Your full name.
  • The name of the programme you applied for.
  • You can also send us a google drive link to your video but please make sure you have given us access to view it with no time limit.
  • The video is only part of the application process. To be considered for the scholarship, you must also complete the application form in My application before the deadline of 31 of March 2024.

Terms and conditions

By applying for the scholarship, you agree to the University of St Andrews using:

  • The offer of a scholarship is provisional upon the offer holder accepting and enrolling on an undergraduate programme at the University of St Andrews in the next academic cycle.
  • The offer of a scholarship is provisional upon the Next Step scholar agreeing to be an ambassadorial role and carrying out their ambassadorial duties for up to ten hours per semester. Awardees who wish to withdraw from this ambassadorial role will have their second instalment of the funding withdrawn.
  • The panel will shortlist up to ten applicants for review.
  • The panel will shortlist up to ten applicants for review.
  • The panel will select up to four successful candidates. if no suitable candidates are identified, no award will be made.
  • The University will communicate the outcome of the selection panel to successful applicants only.
  • The selection panel will consist of a group of key academics and professional services staff from the University of St Andrews.  All decisions of the panel/s are final.
  • Scholarship applicants and recipients agree to the University of St Andrews using:

         Your video submission for promotional purposes.

  • Students who interrupt, suspend or cease their studies are not eligible to receive the scholarship. In these cases, the University will withdraw the scholarship offer.

When will I know the outcome?

Applicants who have been selected for the scholarship will be informed by 30 April 2024. Only successful applicants will be informed officially of the outcome.

The selection panel will consist of a group of key staff from the International Education Institute at the University of St Andrews. All decisions of the panel are final. Being eligible does not mean an automatic entitlement to scholarship, as the final selection is based on the video submission. 

If no submissions are deemed worthy, no scholarship will be awarded.
