En suite rooms in our self-catered halls offer you the opportunity to live in a bedroom with its own en suite bathroom. You will also have access to a shared kitchen where you will have the flexibility to cook your own meals.

Self-catered halls with en suite rooms

These halls are all modern buildings located on the west side of town near the Sports Centre and the various science buildings on the North Haugh.

Rooms in self-catered halls can vary in size and shape depending on the building.

There are a small number of self-catered en suite rooms that are available to share with another student. Find out about shared rooms at St Andrews.

When can I move in?

Contracts begin on Saturday 7 September 2024.  We are currently planning for student arrivals in to our accommodation for the 2024-25 academic year and will update this page when this is finalised.

  • Students will be asked to book a date and time slot which can be accessed via the pre-arrival section of the application form once an offer is accepted. There are limited numbers for each date and time slot, please ensure you select this as soon as this is active.

Arriving at St Andrews

Kitchens

Rooms in both David Russell Apartments and Fife Park are situated in five-bedroom flats which share a kitchen.

At Agnes Blackadder Hall and Powell Hall, rooms line corridors with a common kitchen shared between about 5 students (Powell) or 10 students (Agnes Blackadder).

Shared kitchens come equipped with the following:

  • oven
  • fridge and freezer
  • electric cooker, with electric hob at Agnes Blackadder and induction hob at David Russell Apartments
  • kettle
  • steam iron and ironing board
  • clothes airer (excluding Agnes Blackadder)
  • pots and pans (excluding Agnes Blackadder)
  • basin, cutlery tray and sink tidy
  • dustpan and brush, broom, mop and bucket, and vacuum cleaner
  • flip top bin
  • recycling bins.

Bedroom

In en suite bedrooms, you will have a double-size bed (approximately 4 foot 6 inches wide; Powell Hall has smaller beds at 4 feet wide). 

Bedrooms have the following pieces of furniture:

  • desk and chair
  • desk lamp and bulb
  • shelving
  • bed, mattress and mattress protector
  • wardrobe and drawer unit
  • waste bin and paper bin.

Bedrooms do not come with bedding, and students should ensure that they bring their own duvet or blankets. Find out more on the bedding information page.

You will have a key or keycard which you will use to gain access to your hall of residence, flat and bedroom; you should keep your key or keycard with you at all times and ensure your room and flat are locked when you go out.

Facilities

All self-catered halls include a range of facilities which ensures that students have everything they need to live independently in St Andrews.

Laundry rooms are available in each self-catered hall, with washers and dryers which are card operated with pre-loaded credit.

There is a range of options for studying in each hall. David Russell Apartments (which shares facilities with Fife Park) and Agnes Blackadder Hall (which shares facilities with Powell Hall) have computer rooms for students to use.

There are also a number of social spaces including common rooms, music rooms, TV rooms and communal chill-out areas.

Cleaning

You are expected to keep your bedroom clean and tidy and are provided with a vacuum cleaner to use. You are also provided with a waste bin for your room which you should empty regularly and directly to the external bins and not to the kitchen area.

You will be responsible for cleaning your own bathroom.

You and the other students sharing a kitchen are jointly responsible for maintaining an acceptable hygiene standard throughout the kitchen area.

Monthly cleaning inspections will be carried out by Accommodation Services to ensure an acceptable hygiene standard is being maintained.

Fees and contracts

The standard contract length for a single en suite room in a self-catered hall is 38 weeks (September to May). Students living in a self-catered halls are allowed to stay in their accommodation over the Christmas and spring vacations.

Support

All University halls of residence have their own wardennial team who live within the hall and are trained to support students in a range of matters – from advice on academic matters through to first aid. New students will meet their warden and team of assistant wardens during their moving in weekend.
