About

The International Education Institute (IE) at the University of St Andrews provides high quality foundation, postgraduate, pre-sessional and short courses for international students. These programmes introduce students to university life through language, academic subject knowledge and cultural development.

A team of over 30 members of staff and more than 20 academic teaching staff design and deliver courses which give students a unique opportunity to become familiar with the demands of university life and to develop the necessary skills for academic success at the University of St Andrews and other institutions in the UK.

Staff at IE are committed and passionate about English language teaching innovation and research. This results in the development of programmes that enable international students to succeed in their studies. These programmes act as a catalyst for future successful careers.

IE's subject and language experts are also responsible for tailor-made courses which are designed for educational institutions and organisations looking for courses that focus on specific areas of interest or subjects, for example these courses may include, but are not limited to:

  • sports
  • science
  • business
  • philosophy
  • teacher education
  • English language and Scottish culture
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

IE is also home to the Academic English Service (AES) which provides free language support to current University of St Andrews students who use English as an additional language.
