Make it happen
The make it happen stage applies to those who have a clear plan of what they want to do after university and are ready to take the next step. However, they may not be sure about what they need to do to put their plan into action, and could perhaps use some help.
If you are at this stage, you could think about getting ready for work, preparing for further study, and reviewing and reflecting.
Getting ready for work
To get ready for work, you could identify organisations you want to work for. You can do this by exploring TargetJobs UK 300, the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers, and the Careers Centre’s career sector pages, which include prominent examples of employers within each sector. You could also attend events to meet prospective employers directly.
To find relevant vacancies both in the UK and beyond, consider visiting the jobs pages for sources of opportunities in the areas of work that interest you. To ensure you don’t miss any deadlines, look at the Careers Centre’s career timelines. If you’re an entrepreneur, get ready to launch your business.
Once you’ve found a vacancy you would like to apply to, visit the Careers Centre’s how to apply for a job pages for advice on how to write a CV or cover letter, prepare for an interview, or practise psychometric tests. Consider further whether you can use your professional network to get tips on applying to the organisation you would like to work for
If you have a disability, be mindful of reasonable adjustments that you can ask employers to make as part of the application process.
Preparing for further study
If you are not yet interested in pursuing employment, but wish to transition to further study, at this stage you can prepare for this too.
To do so, consider visiting the Careers Centre’s further study pages, whether you are interested in pursuing a postgraduate qualification or a professional qualification. Here you can find advice on applications and finding funding.
Additionally, consider visiting the Careers Centre’s pages on writing a personal statement for postgraduate study (which can be reviewed by a careers adviser in a careers appointment) and how to request an academic reference.
You may also need to request a transcript from the University to demonstrate your suitability for the course to which you’re applying.
Reviewing and reflecting
Not everyone is ready for work or further study – learn more about making the most of a gap year.
