MSt (Res) in Art History

The University of St Andrews has recently introduced the Masters of Studies by Research (MSt (Res)) as a new research-based Master’s degree. This is a one-year degree (two years for part-time), where students work towards a thesis of 30,000 words. The MSt (Res) provides an opportunity to spend a shorter time in a research environment either for a standalone degree or as preparation for a PhD.

Admission to research study is normally on the basis of successful completion of a taught postgraduate degree in the relevant discipline, and in principle, this condition also applies to the MSt (Res). However, in certain circumstances the School of Art History will consider candidates who don’t have a Master’s degree, or are not currently working towards one. If this is the case, candidates will be considered if they have a good undergraduate degree in the relevant subject area, can demonstrate evidence of strong research skills, and can provide a writing sample and research proposal of sufficiently high quality.
